What is it this Hastings Speaks you speak of then?

Hastings Speaks is creating a new modern Doomsday record of ordinary people’s lives in Hastings in 2016  using social media, and spoken word events.

Part of the 1066 Roots celebrations, we are working with the Mass Observations movement, inviting residents to participate in completing a diary about their lives on May 12th next year.

The diaries will provide a rich and comprehensive snapshot of life in Hastings – the good, the bad and ugly; the inspiring, uplifting, depressing and difficult; it will record and celebrate resident’s lives and create a permanent record for future generations.

Throughout Spring 2016 we will be hosting a series of events in Hastings & St Leonards to invite people to get involved, using local media, face to face events, neighbourhood meetings, workshops, social media and festival events.

Entries will be uploaded to the Hastings Speaks Blog and be shared through community events and libraries.

Following the diary event on May 12th we will be running a series of creative writing and drama workshops for people to help them to creatively  develop their diary entries.

As part of the festival programming we will run a Spoken Word event featuring diary highlights, focusing on the headines emerging from the project and what they mean for Hastings. 1066contemporary festival will run during October 2016.

The best entries will be published in a Hastings Speaks Magazine. A permanent archive will be handed over to Hastings Borough Council.

If you would like to know more about Hastings Speaks or get involved (we are actively looking for volunteers), please email us at hastingsspeaks@gmail.com or comment here.
