Don't let the technology put you off writing and sending in your diaries

We've had some feedback that it can be difficult to download the diary template, and the signature pack from the blog.

This is of course, very frustrating so I have looked in to this several times.  I can confirm that both guidance and template are downloadable but the way we've had to set them up - due to using a blog as a website I think - is by saving them in a google drive, then making them editable and for people to save them to their own computers.

What this effectively means is you need to download it - it goes to a google screen then you either type in directly to google (if you use it then save) or download again directly to your computer.

This is all a bit of a faff for us normal non-technical types, though so please don't let it stop you sending your diary in.

You can email us at hastingsspeaks@gmail.com for a template...or your can simply cut and paste these words below and send them in with your diary - either directly on an email or as an attachment.

“I donate my 12th May diary to Hastings Speaks. I consent to it being made publicly

Diary Day May 12th

What is it?
Hastings Speaks is creating a new Domesday record of ordinary people’s lives in Hastings in 2016 as part of the Root 1066 International Festival, using diaries, blogs, photos and pictures.
We are inviting residents to participate in completing a diary about their lives on May 12th. The project is prompted by the work of the Mass Observation Archive who set their first national diary day on May 12th 1937 – to record the ‘common man’s view of King George VI’s coronation.
The diaries will provide a rich and comprehensive snapshot of life in Hastings:  what gets us out of bed, what we do with our days, what makes us laugh and drives us crazy.
What can you do?
Download a template from the blog page and write up your day – (see: 25 Ways to Write A Diary)
Pictures, words, podcasts, poems, a blow by blow account – whatever works for you.

We have collection points for hard copies of the diaries at:  Hastings Museum, Tourist Information, Sussex Coast College Reception, Ore & Hollington Libraries.

What happens next?
We are asking for all diary entries to be sent to us by May 30th.  Emails containing day diaries pop up in hastingsspeaks@gmail.com email account.  We begin to code names/address to separate names from entries, (e.g, to anonymise) and publish diaries on our blog and in Hastings Independent Press.
We are running a workshop on May 24th to show you how to polish/edit or turn your day into a work of fiction.
We will be publishing a selection of blogs in a Hastings Speaks Anthology – on sale in September. We will be inviting participants to read work out loud (or have it read) at a Spoken Word Event on September 28th.

The ROOT 1066 International Festival is inspired by the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings and funded by Hastings Borough Council and Arts Council England. If you would like to know more about Hastings Speaks or get involved call Chris on 07738 763161 or Bev on 07901 916288 or email: Hastingspeaks@gmail.com.
