Don't let the technology put you off writing and sending in your diaries
We've had some feedback that it can be difficult to download the diary template, and the signature pack from the blog.
Signed:
This is of course, very frustrating so I have looked in to this several times. I can confirm that both guidance and template are downloadable but the way we've had to set them up - due to using a blog as a website I think - is by saving them in a google drive, then making them editable and for people to save them to their own computers.
What this effectively means is you need to download it - it goes to a google screen then you either type in directly to google (if you use it then save) or download again directly to your computer.
This is all a bit of a faff for us normal non-technical types, though so please don't let it stop you sending your diary in.
You can email us at hastingsspeaks@gmail.com for a template...or your can simply cut and paste these words below and send them in with your diary - either directly on an email or as an attachment.
“I donate my 12th May
diary to Hastings Speaks. I consent to it being made publicly
available as part of the Root 1066 International Festival /archived

be reproduced in full or in part on websites, in publications and in broadcasts
as approved by Hastings Speaks. I agree to Hastings Speaks assuming the role of

Diary Day May 12th
What is it?
Hastings Speaks is creating a new Domesday record of ordinary people’s
lives in Hastings in 2016 as part of the Root 1066 International Festival,
using diaries, blogs, photos and pictures.
We are inviting
residents to participate in completing a diary about their lives on May 12th.
The project is prompted by the work of the Mass Observation Archive who set
their first national diary day on May 12th 1937 – to record the ‘common man’s
view of King George VI’s coronation.
The diaries will
provide a rich and comprehensive snapshot of life in Hastings: what gets us out of bed, what we do with our
days, what makes us laugh and drives us crazy.
What can you do?
Download a template from the blog page and write up your day – (see:
25 Ways to Write A Diary)
Pictures, words, podcasts, poems, a blow by blow account – whatever
works for you.

Instagram #hastingsspeaks
We have collection points for hard copies of the diaries at: Hastings Museum, Tourist Information, Sussex
Coast College Reception, Ore & Hollington Libraries.
What
happens next?
We are
asking for all diary entries to be sent to us by May 30th. Emails containing day diaries pop up in hastingsspeaks@gmail.com email account. We
begin to code names/address to separate names from entries, (e.g, to anonymise)
and publish diaries on our blog and in Hastings Independent Press.
We are
running a workshop on May 24th to show you how to polish/edit or
turn your day into a work of fiction.
We will be publishing a selection of blogs in a
Hastings Speaks Anthology – on sale in September. We will be inviting
participants to read work out loud (or have it read) at a Spoken Word Event on
September 28th.
The ROOT 1066 International Festival
is inspired by the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings and funded by
Hastings Borough Council and Arts Council England.

Countdown - 10 Days to the 12th of May
We’re feeling excited and a little anxious
about the impending 12th – after months of plotting and planning,
workshops and visiting groups to talk about our project, we’ve really got no
idea what to expect on the 12th. But, however many diaries find
their way to us, we have to say, it's been fabulous working
with groups, schools and meeting so many ‘lapsed’ diary writers out there, and hearing about the interesting and often surprising ways people intend to record their days on the 12th. We ran
a workshop at Silverdale Academy, where some lovely children and parents
surprised us with their very descriptive diaries. Horizons Community Learning are doing a 'one thing I learnt today' wall. Sussex Coast College have got
onboard in a major way with the ‘secret postcard diary’ wall. We’ve run diary writing
workshops around Hastings and St Leonards, which taught us a lot about ways people
use diaries – not to mention the unforgettable breakfast routine one
participant wrote up in the style of romantic novel – I haven’t been able to
eat cornflakes since!
Anyway, being nosy kind of folk, we can’t wait
to find out what you’ve been up to, and what, (if any) themes start to emerge
about life in Hastings in 2016.
If you haven’t put pen to paper yet, and are
looking for inspiration, how about:
1.
Five
words, three words, one word a day – that sums up your day – try mixing them
together using Wordle or word clouds (http://worditout.com)
2.
Five
Minute Diary – Just write for five minutes without stopping.
3.
Write
about one thing/something you did today, take your time.
4.
Take
an object or a photograph of something you connect with...write a line about
why you like it/hate it/connect.
5.
Top
10s - Make a list of what you love/hate/desire/lost/found etc
6.
A
conversation – recap on a chat you had with your friend/Mum/overheard at the
bus-stop
7.
Be
a social scientist. Sit in one spot for an hour. Observe what happens.
8.
Be
a travel writer – take a walk and report on your journey
9.
Make
a sound recording of your day
10.
Interview
someone about their day
11.
Comparisons
– what were you doing on this day last year? What do you want to be doing next
year?
12.
Write
it as a news story/police report/study of animal behaviour
13.
Pretend
to be someone else – a dog/chef/burglar/seagull
14. Upload
a post it of your thoughts or a picture/image of your day to Instagram #HastingsSpeaks
15.
Do
a nano diary on Twitter - @HastingsSpeaks
16.
Explore
a theme – love/shoes/news/health etc
We will be in Priory Meadow on Saturday 7th
of May and in the town centre on May 12th – from 2pm, come and say hello.
